Navigating Your Way Through the Ph.D. Program

It is possible to begin the Ph.D. program from either the Bachelor's or Master's level. As with the M.A. program, completion of a set of core courses must precede completion of field courses. Students who begin the program with a Master's degree in economics must complete at least seven (6) courses; three are core courses, two are field courses, and one is an elective. Ideal course sequences for TAs and GSSs entering with an MA are shown below. As with our Master's students, we expect students with TAs to take three courses per semester and students with GSSs to take two courses per semester.

Students who begin the program from the Bachelor's level first have to complete the four M.A. core courses before proceeding on to the Ph.D. core courses. Such students must also take two elective courses for a total of six in addition to taking the Ph.D. course sequence. An ideal sequence for a student with a TA entering with a Bachelor's degree is shown below. Students funded by other means do not necessarily have to follow the exact sequences below.
