Financial Aid

The department administers a limited amount of financial aid to its graduate students each year. All applicants for full-time study, including international applicants, are eligible to apply for these awards. Please note that the bulk of financial aid is devoted to fall semester admissions.

Award Types

Teaching Assistants receive up to 12 semester hours (three classes) of free tuition each semester, and a cash stipend in return for twenty hours of work per week. The 2009-10 academic year stipend is $16,260. Teaching assistants help out in tutoring or classroom instruction at levels ranging from our Economics Principles Workshop for undergraduate students to assisting in the teaching of the graduate theory courses.

Graduate Student Scholarship recipients receive 8 semester hours (two classes) of free tuition, but no cash stipend.

Where the above forms of financial aid are not available, the Graduate Coordinator may recommend students for a Dean's Schoarship. Dean's Scholarships are limited and are awarded by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Award Criteria

Financial aid awards are made on the basis of perceived academic merit, as shown in the undergraduate transcript, GRE scores, and related material submitted as part of the admissions process. Students admitted to the Master's program generally have at least a B average and GRE scores in the range of 600-800 Quantitative and 4.0-6.0 Analytical. Students admitted to the Ph.D. program generally have at least a B+ average and GRE scores in the range of 650-800 Quantitative and 4.5-6.0 Analytical. Students offered financial aid score at the top of these ranges.

How to Apply

Applicants request financial aid on their admissions application. There is no separate financial aid application for new students. Continuing students who did not receive aid in their first year should submit a request in writing to the Graduate Secretary by February 1 for the following academic year.

Deadline

February 1 of each academic year is the application deadline for all Ph.D. applications, and is the priority deadline for master's applicants requesting financial aid. All material required for the admissions application must be received by this deadline.

Non-international applicants should visit Northeastern's Student Services website for additional funding resources.
